Environmental Impacts of Illegal Cannabis Cultivation
Presented By: Dr. Mourad Gabriel, Integral Ecology Research Center (IERC)

November 13, 2019 - 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center: 921 Waterfront Dr., Eureka, CA 95501

An emerging threat to California's wildlife and habitats is the escalating environmental repercussions from clandestine and unregulated marijuana cultivation.
Addressing this issue requires collaboration among many different professional groups with different goals and mandates. This talk aims to highlight current data being collected and the tools used by scientists, natural resource managers, and law enforcement but also to discuss how we can prevent the continued natural resource exploitation from this activity. In addition, it should provide information on the known and unknown threats researchers and law enforcement may encounter during documentation of clandestine grow sites. At the same time, it will stimulate the needed discussion of developing logical and feasible standard operating protocols for grow site assessments.

In 2012, the fisher (Pekania pennanti) became the flagship species elucidating the mounting issue of environmental impacts clandestine marijuana cultivation has on wildlife. Before these published findings, anecdotal information on the environmental impacts was available but largely unknown to the core body of natural resource professionals, the public or policymakers. Since 2012, additional papers have emerged, and swelling media coverage on the topic has highlighted this as a significant issue not only for the fisher but also for other biotic and abiotic resources. This talk will present recent natural resource data in addition to crossover subject matter relating to public and law enforcement health concerns.
